There's a wide range of walkie talkies to choose from. In fact, the choice and variety can sometimes be a bit bewildering. One of the first choices you to need to make is between a licensed and unlicensed radio. What you opt for depends on the kind of work you hope to do with it and the distances between users. Let's take a look at some of the pros and cons of each.

What are the advantages of licence free radios?

No licence required and therefore no additional payment is required. They are generally cheaper. As they operate on pre-programmed channels you should never receive any interference from licensed radios.

What are the disadvantages of licence free radios?

As they use pre-programmed channels it's possible that there may be interference from users nearby. The range of licence free radios is shorter than licensed products. As the channels operate on a first come first serve basis, they can be busy at certain times of day and year. Therefore, they can't be relied upon for emergency situations.

Why opt for a licensed two-way radio?

If a radio doesn't operate on a pre-programmed PMR446 frequency you will need a licence. It frees the user from any threat of interference and offers a greater degree of privacy, making it a good choice for hospitals and some businesses. They also generally have a greater range and more battery life, making them reliable in an emergency.

What are the downsides of a licensed radio?

On top of the cost of your radio you'll also have to buy a licence. These cost anywhere from £100 rising up to £500 in busy areas such as London.
